virginia payne, original character, opossum avatar, super trash bros
opossums have often been seen as symbols of deception and of false fronts. seeing one could be accusatory and a sign that you should change your ways to become more genuine, or perhaps that you need to learn to hide your true feelings to get what you want. an opossum is a lesson in how to use deception properly; how to use appearances, strategy, and patience to your advantage.
ginny can see through illusions cast by other powered characters and can smell magic, magical artifacts, and people imbued with magical powers. ginny very commonly performs 'searches' for others for payment - she can find people or objects when given aspects of them to use for divining. with a name or a description she can usually find an object or person's location; if she touches something, she'll almost always be able to sense its true name. in true hufflepuff manner, she is an excellent finder.
ginny's powers aren't for exorcisms or banishment. opossums are resilient and hardy, seen as symbols of recovery and of expanding boundaries. instead, her powers focus on enabling and conjuring. she has insights and can give boosts based on needs, but her powers are still limited to what her avatar will hand over for use. she's far from omnipotent.
and on that note; other characters who can read minds or sense presences might get a feel for ginny's avatar, opossum. opossum is generally in the form that sounds obvious - a very normal-looking opossum - but will also sometimes appear in the form of an old woman with completely black eyes. she can hide or show herself at will to regular humans, but anyone with extrasensory abilities might be just as aware of her location as ginny herself is. opossum is not always near her, but she is always tethered to her, and will generally appear immediately if ginny is threatened or needs to draw from her powers. she might also just show up to offer unwanted commentary, because honestly, she's thousands of years old and sometimes she gets bored.
